DIY Gel Nails: A Step By Step Guide

Updated: May 19, 2023

Are you tired of constantly having to redo your nail polish because it chips or smudges? Or going to the nail salon waiting to get them done, or when you get them done you don't like them? If so, you might want to consider trying DIY gel nails. Gel nails are a great way to achieve long-lasting, shiny nails that won't chip or smudge easily. Gel Nails are easy to apply and are less brittle on the nail beds. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to do your own gel nails at home.

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

To do your own gel nails at home, you'll need a few supplies:

  • Gel nail polish in your desired color

  • Base coat

  • Topcoat

  • UV or LED lamp

  • Rubbing alcohol

  • Cotton balls or pads

  • Nail file

  • Nail buffer

  • Cuticle pusher

Step 2: Prepare Your Nails

Before applying the gel polish, you need to ensure your nails are clean and dry. Start by removing any old nail polish and buffing your nails to remove any ridges. Push back your cuticles using a cuticle pusher. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water and dry them completely.

Step 3: Apply the Base Coat

Apply a thin layer of base coat to your nails, making sure to cover the entire nail. Be careful not to get any on your skin. Place your nails under the UV or LED lamp and cure them according to the instructions on the gel polish.

Step 4: Apply the Gel Polish

Now it's time to apply the gel polish. Start with a thin layer of polish and make sure to cover the entire nail. If the polish is too thick, it will not cure properly. Place your nails under the lamp and cure them according to the instructions on the gel polish. Repeat this process until you achieve your desired level of opacity.

Step 5: Apply the Topcoat

Once you're happy with the color, it's time to apply the topcoat. Apply a thin layer of top coat to each nail, making sure to cover the entire nail. Place your nails under the lamp and cure them according to the instructions on the gel polish.

Step 6: Clean Up

After curing your nails, remove any sticky residue left on your nails with a cotton ball or pad dipped in rubbing alcohol. Your nails should be smooth and shiny.

And there you have it – DIY gel nails! With a little practice and patience, you can have salon-worthy nails from the comfort of your own home. Remember to follow the instructions on the gel polish carefully, and don't hesitate to ask for help if you're unsure about anything. Happy painting!

Some additional tips to keep in mind:

  • Always follow the instructions on the gel polish you are using, as curing times and application techniques may vary.

  • Use a quality UV or LED lamp to ensure your nails cure properly.

  • Apply the gel polish in thin layers to avoid peeling or chipping.

  • Avoid touching your nails or getting them wet for at least 30 minutes after curing to prevent smudging.

  • If you make a mistake, clean it up with a small brush dipped in rubbing alcohol before curing it under the lamp.
